Fret SNCF and Captrain France join forces to prevent goods from being shifted to the roads, for the benefit of Europe's railways.

From August 9 to August 30, 2024, DB Infra Go was organizing major works to the south of the German city of Rastatt (65 km from Strasbourg), during which time all rail traffic would have been interrupted. However, Rail Logistics Europe and SNCF Réseau came up with a robust solution that allowed rerouting via France.

At Rail Logistics Europe, for the past year and a half, teams from Fret SNCF and Captrain France have been working hand in hand to meet this challenge, mobilizing 11 locomotives, 36 drivers and management teams to ensure that 25% of the traffic that would have been affected by the work is maintained. Running mainly between Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, the trains thus “saved” will ensure the satisfaction of Captrain Deutschland customers (DB Cargo, Crossrail, VIAS Ruhr Valley Railways, Hectorrail, Captrain Cargo Ouest, LTE NL, SBB Cargo International SA), as well as Fret SNCF customers (Rhenus).

Ordering train paths, creating and implementing safety agreements, operating procedures, finding drivers and traction units... Behind this three-week operation lies a colossal amount of work that only the synergy of Rail Logistics Europe's rail companies could offer to make these detour a success. This effort was eagerly awaited by the European Commission and the DGITM after the reverse modal shift from rail to road that followed the work carried out by DB Netz in summer 2017, during which almost all rail traffic had to be cancelled, notably following a track collapse.
